Clogs Ostrom
I went to Northern Highlands Reginal High School in New Jersey with Meredith Ostrom. Her nick name was "clogs" because she would wear these clogs all the time and you could hear her coming from a mile away.
Ring Around The Rosies
After the Duran Duran show I went up to where some enviable people with backstage passes were standing. I ended up standing by a beautiful girl dressed all in black (as was I… not beautiful- just dressed all in black, that is) I later realized it was Mary after seeing her pictures online. When they opened the doors I kept pace with her. When they started to ask to see backstage passes she just kept walking and so did I. They took us to this back room and sat us down on the chairs that were placed in a circle. Simon came out and said to everyone that we were obviously going to play “ring around the rosies” because we were all in a circle and so when he started to sing everyone was to get up and walk around. There was a bit of laughter and he began to talk to the girl I had walked up with. Then Nick came out with a glass of red wine and bee-lined to the same girl. I felt really bad interrupting Nick from his conversation with her but I did. He seemed ever so slightly irritated but graciously signed anyway.
NYC
We went there, but of course couldn't get in. Then I started chatting with this super tall English woman. Turned out she was Lady Victoria Hervey. She took a liking to my friend and I for whatever reason. She went in, then came back out with Meredith. Meredith smiled at me and said to the bouncer, "Nick wanted to be sure that his friends got in. Can his friends come in?" The bouncer slapped a wrist band on us each, and in we went.
Pleasure Island
We were at Duran Duran's New Year's Eve show at Pleasure Island in Disney World for New Year's Eve 2000 / 2001. We were right next to Mary & Tatjana in the VIP area watching the show and then later we saw Nick and Mary with her parents and his parents backstage. I heard that Nick invited Mary and her parents to Florida to meet his family.
Fishing Club
i was at a funeral on sunday! my husbands sister! very horrible story! my brother in laws childhood friend was there and a bunch of us were talking and of course my love for duran always comes up! he all of a sudden says that the head of his fishing clubs daughter is dating the drummer for 2 years! i said that sounds strange because roger is newly divorced! he says his name is nick! i say that is the keyboard player! So the head of his fishing club must be Meredith's Dad. He says this guy is always talking about it because they are so popular again! she is from nj, but i wont say were! i think he realized it was a mistake saying anything to me!! i bugged him the whole time!! Who’s Deborah Harry?
After the NYC show I had the chance to go back stage to meet the band. My realtor is friends with Barbara and Roy Ostrom, Meredith’s parents; the live here in Northern New Jersey. We were taken into a large room that had about 10 tables each with 8 chairs or so. This was my first meeting ever with anyone from the band. There about 70 people in the room...fans, friends, acquaintances and family. After about 30 minutes Nick walked in dressed in all black; we tried to play it cool and not bum rush him. Barbara introduced us; he was polite, charming, cool, funny and as vertically challenged as I thought lol; the 007 of the band. He told us that they going to Milk Studio on Monday in NYC for a photo shoot and he would be heading back to London later this week. He didn’t stay long but during his short visit he made a long lasting positive impression.
p.s. As we were leaving a fan pleaded with Barbara to take a photo with her, she obliged.. As we walked away Barbra asked me “Who’s Deborah Harry?” I said “The leader singer from Blondie, why?” The fan thought Barbra was Deborah Harry...I guess you had to be there.
My Meeting with Julie Anne
Back in 1980's (before julie anne had married nick.)i think i was 15 years old at the time i called julie anne up on the phone.i wasn't able to get ahold of her until the third try.i told her wanted to do a story about her for a school newspaper.she was extremely friendly and agreed to let me come over to her house in iowa.i had my best friend with me,tracie,and another girl who's name i can't recall come over with us.in fact it was the girls mother that drove us to julie annes.we were all from 3 different schools.i was at valley at the time,my friend at lincoln,and the other girl was from the same school that julie once attended. julie at the time was just wearing a white shirt with shoulder pads and a pair of jeans and looked so beautiful.she was super friendly to us and very easy to talk to.one of her female friends was also present.we had about 10 questions written out for her.some were about modeling and then the questions came up about nick.when she first met him she did say that nick had tried to warn her that they were well known in england at the time.she said she thought to herself at the time(not having a big head on herself she just thought he might be trying hard to impress her as women will know what i mean here) "your a cute kid" until she got there she had no idea how true it was.LOL i do recall us asking her to describe nick to us.her friend spoke up and said "bouncy" at the time which we all sorta laughted at.julie had said that she spoke to nick that day and he had said his eyes were bothering him at the time from all the flashes from the camera that day at a press conference.her friend had to leave and they were saying their goodbyes.we had noticed a stack of photos on her table and julie was kind enough to let us look at them.they were personal photos of the band as well as claire's photo was in there too!i looked at julie and told her that she and nick made a perfect couple.before we left she was kind enough to take some photos of us.on 2 sad notes the story never got published and wish i could have the photos here today to show you.over the years the ones i had were lost.i did write a letter to julie giving my reguards and i told her at the time i felt bad not only about not getting the story published but i felt i had invaded too much into her privacy. here is the odd twist and just shows you how small the world really is.my friend,tracie,used to know julie because julie once dated her uncle craig and julie would babysit her when she was younger!skip to the year they got a divorce i was in my room and came out to tell my mom the sad news and i had no idea we had company.it turns out it was an old babysitter of mine and she spoke up and said she was friends with julie!so so bizarre you can't even imagine what i was thinking.over the years i have kepted pretty quite and never been even on a duran duran site until now.i look back and i think despite what ever feelings anyone has of julie she was a kind hearted sweet warm person who opened her door to us.she had nothing to gain from us.to this day i wish her the best in life and i wonder how she is doing.i feel bad and would love to express again how truely sorry i am.
