Quotes

Nick on Women

"I like girls I can talk to, girls with happy, friendly personalities, who aren't too shy." 1983

"'What's that?' I was in for the kill." 1985, on meeting his future wife

"We have two dictionaries when we play, because Julie, being an American spells things differently. Like kerb, c-u-r-b. That's preposterous! I hate Webster's Dictionary when I'm playing Scrabble! And really, I hate it because she always beats me." 1985

"It's pretty strange business being pregnant, having it drawn out through all that time. No, I wouldn't fancy being pregnant at all!" 1986

"DAT is like a beautiful woman...so much fun to slowly unwrap." year unknown

"She loves people and she's a dreadful flirt already. Of course, until Simon and Yasmin had their child she was the only baby in the band, so she was rather spoiled. She's like the band's child - and she dances while we rehearse. She loves to entertain and is very outgoing, which is nice." 1990, on Tatjana

"She loves music and by the age of two she could operate every gadget in the house - TV, video - better than Julie Anne could." 1990, on Tatjana

"I love putting on makeup, and I'm going to put on twice as much as Madeleine! I never go out without at least a bit of mascara on my eyes!" 1995

"I started wearing makeup when I was a bit older. I would've used my mum's makeup box, but she probably didn't have the colours I was after. So I always used my girlfriend's makeup instead. I wore anything that glittered and shone." 1998

"One of my gay friends calls me a lesbian, actually - she says, 'You're just a girl who likes girls.' I've got a lot of empathy for the gay world, always have had, I think a lot of the most creative people are gay. And a lot of my dear, dear friends, but as for my own tastes, it just doesn't work like that. Genetically it didn't go that way." 2000

"She's completely into music more than anything else. She loves 'N Sync, there's nothing I can do about that." 2000, on Tatjana

"I like going for walks, but she's not so keen on walking. We go to the movies and we go shopping, we hang out. She's a little card shark actually; she can beat me at almost any card game - it's that 'Oh, just one more hour before I go to bed' trick." 2000, on Tatjana

"I took Meredith to Italy. It was OK. But I don't like going abroad because I've travelled the world. Next time we'll stay at home and do nothing. It's more fun." 2002

"When my daughter sees me putting on eyeliner she'll still say, 'Oh dad.' So I then tell her Justin Timberlake wears it and it will be fine." 2004

"I think yachts are ghastly. I like them when they're tied up. Just as I like women." 2004

"We've always annoyed the rock establishment anyway. Who can blame them - we were a band of teenagers from Birmingham wearing make-up with a large following of pretty girls." 2004

Tara Palmer-Tomkinson on Nick:

Loyalty, discretion and honesty are the three crucial elements of love. Nick Rhodes [of Duran Duran] gave me those - and there have been others. Not all men are bastards. Tara P-T talks from the heart in an article from the Mail on Sunday, 25 April 2004

Engaged?

From a 1998 internet chat with Nick Rhodes ........

Joanne: "I hear you and Madeline are engaged - Congratulations! Have you set
a date yet?"

Nick Rhodes: "Actually Madeline and I are not engaged. However we are very
happy. I think this all started from a very large plastic ring."

Daffodil

In a piece for SHOO magazine, Meredith was asked if she had ever made a fashion faux pas.

"Have I committed any fashion faux pas? Just the one. Nick and I were going to a wedding and I put on a bright yellow skirt with matching top, shoes and bag. Nick just said, 'No way - you look like a daffodil.' He was right. But then, in New York, we all dress like daffodils at weddings."

Trollywood Ask Katy

Dearest Nick, As you are the band's unofficial film critic, I thought I might send this query your way: Have you checked out Madeleine Farley's documentary film, "Trollywood"? If so, what are your thoughts? If not, I suppose you know it used Duran Duran music in the soundtrack (along with Velvet Underground and other cool acts).Big time thanks + love, Nicky xx

“Yes indeed I have seen Madeleine Farley’s film TROLLYWOOD. And mighty fine it is too. I was waiting for some kind of official release before plugging it, however, since you have mentioned it, for those who have yet to have the pleasure start counting the days. The soundtrack also includes several TV Mania tracks that I did with Warren as well as Duran Duran’s DRIVE BY.”   [posted 7/5/2004 U.S.A.]

Playgirl

PLAYGIRL: How do you keep your relationships together through all the distractions?
Nick: I find it important to have stability. I tend to be very monogamous anyway. When I find someone I love, I just become incredibly attached. I’m a person who will wait for years to pick out the right person.

PLAYGIRL: What kind of woman attracts you?
Nick: I like a woman with kind of pussycat eyes. Beautiful eyes and sleek bones. My girlfriend Madeline’s a pussycat.

PLAYGIRL: What can immediately turn you off about a woman?
Nick: Fat ankles.

PLAYGIRL: When did you lose your virginity?
Nick: Oh, God. I was very young. It was a bit boring, really. I never really discuss it. I don’t usually discuss sex.

PLAYGIRL: Most men seem to dislike the word vagina. Does it bother you?  And penis?
Nick: (Smiling) I’m perfectly happy with either of them.
Warren: Oh, really?
Nick: The word!

Warren: He likes to photograph things.
PLAYGIRL: Sexual situations?
Nick: No, portraits mostly. I like to make somebody look better than they think they look. I think it’s exciting committing someone to celluloid.
